The people and artists who have seen and commented on this painting believe that I have made a “Lord of the Rings” reference. The flaming spire launching fire high into the sky, the pervasive smoke, and the desolate landscape. If the truth be known, it is my take on the Battle of Savo Island during the Second World War in the Pacific. It was considered the worst defeat in a single fleet action for the U.S. Navy in the war.  The Americans with only a few cruisers and destroyers stopped the much larger and stronger Japanese Battleship fleet from decimating the Marines landing on Guadalcanal.  Those American commanders and men showed the courageous actions Americans were willing to go to protect the troops landing on the Japanese held Island.  How could such valor be labeled a defeat?
